About the IAFC

The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) is the voice of fire and emergency service leaders around the world. Established in 1873, the IAFC is a powerful network of more than 12,000 chief fire and emergency service officers who are the world's leading experts in fire fighting, emergency medical services, terrorism response, hazardous materials, natural disasters, search and rescue, and fire prevention and education.

The IAFC provides the leaders of the fire service with representation on Capitol Hill, securing legislative victories on staffing, benefits and funding issues. IAFC's professional development opportunities include the premier conference for fire service leaders, Fire-Rescue International, as well as conferences on EMS, wildland fire, volunteer and combination departments and hazardous materials. Members receive up-to-date communication on critical fire service issues through timely e-mail alerts, a twice-monthly newsletter and a comprehensive Web site. Special interest sections and committees cover such fire service topics as emergency medical services, fire and life safety, hazardous materials, health and safety and much more.

About the Fire Service

America's fire and emergency service reaches every community across the nation, covering urban, suburban and rural neighborhoods. The fire service is the only entity that is locally situated, staffed, trained and equipped to respond to all types of emergencies. The fire department responds to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes as well as to man-made catastrophes such as hazardous materials spills, arson and terrorism. As such, America's fire service is an all-hazard, all-risk response entity.
