About LMA

The IAFC and IAFF began the Labor-Management Alliance program in the 1990s, after several Votes of No Confidence around the United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Strong labor-management relationships are critical to effectively address the financial and operational difficulties most fire departments are facing in the current economic environment. The LMA leadership team is made up of highly experienced and successful fire chiefs and union presidents. Together they form the team that helps fire departments build and enhance positive, cooperative labor-management relationships.

The program's facilitator teams are made up of members of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). LMA facilitators will teach you and your department how to improve labor-management relations and increase the level of trust between the labor and management.

LMA Benefits

  • Improve interpersonal communications between labor and management.
  • Increase the involvement and cooperation from all members of the organization.
  • Create unity and focus around the goals that will benefit your organization and its members.
  • Learn how to proactively minimize the number of grievances and other adverse actions that affect labor-management relationships and members.
  • Discover new ways to work through and past labor-management obstacles to accomplish more for the fire department and the community.

Guiding Principles

"The delivery reminds participants from both labor and management that they are on the same team with the same ultimate mission of serving the community and taking care of their fellow firefighters. It also provides a format that highlights the unique position that the two parties have to make that mission successful, as well as highlighting the skill sets of the individuals involved."
-- Brian C. O’Neill, 2nd Vice President, Kentucky Professional Firefighters
