Firefighter Code of Ethics

The Firefighter Code of Ethics calls individual firefighters to commit to maintaining the highest level of professionalism and behavior. It was developed by the IAFC’s Executive Fire Officers (EFO) Section* to preserve the public trust.

This code is a guide for acceptable behavior already practiced by all but a very small percentage in the fire and emergency service. Isolated lapses in ethical judgment by fire service personnel across the U.S. led to the code of ethics being developed.

The Firefighter Code of Ethics is supported by local, state and national organizations, as well as prominent fire service leaders.

* Formerly NSEFO, the National Society of Executive Fire Officers
