FEMA Announces SAFER Application Period Opening in February

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that the application period for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program will open on Monday, February 8 at 8:00 AM ET and close on Friday, March 12, at 5:00 PM ET.

Congress appropriated $355 million for the SAFER program to improve operational staffing for career, volunteer, and combination fire departments. The funds can be used by fire departments for a Hiring Activity for career firefighters or a Recruitment and Retention Activity for volunteer firefighters.

There are no cost-share, match, position cost limit requirements nor maintenance of expenditure requirements for these grants. In addition, the Hiring Activity supports the hiring of new firefighters; the change of status of part-time/paid-on-call firefighters to full-time status; the rehire of laid-off firefighters; and the retention of firefighters facing layoffs.

The IAFC encourages all fire departments to apply for these SAFER grants. Further information, such as the Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 SAFER Notice of Funding OpportunityFrequently Asked Questions, and other helpful tools can be found at the FY 2020 SAFER application guidance materials website
