Honoring the Leaders Who Put Safety First – 2025 SHSS Award Winners Announced
The IAFC Safety, Health and Survival Section (SHSS) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 SHSS Awards, recognizing the outstanding individuals and organizations leading the charge in firefighter health, wellness, and safety.
Each of these honorees exemplifies the values of safety leadership: enhancing operations, promoting wellness, and setting new standards for excellence across the fire service. Whether through department-wide programs or individual action, their contributions are shaping a safer, stronger future for our profession.
The awards will be presented during the SHSS Reception at Fire-Rescue International (FRI) in August.

Alan Brunacini Fire Service Executive Safety Award
Chief Huber is being recognized for his visionary leadership and transformative impact on both firefighter and community safety. From pioneering live burn training and command readiness to launching wellness centers and public safety programs, his forward-thinking initiatives have positioned LSFD as a national model of preparedness and care.
Sponsored by MSA Safety Incorporated, this award is presented to a chief officer within a fire department (of any size or composition) who has shown outstanding leadership regarding health and safety.

Chief Haase and the Staunton Fire Protection District are being honored for creating a deeply rooted culture of safety within their all-volunteer department. Through rigorous training, cancer prevention protocols, and comprehensive health evaluations, SFPD has become a national example by earning OSHA SHARP status and showing that small, volunteer departments can lead the way in firefighter safety.

John Miclot is being posthumously honored for his exceptional commitment to firefighter safety. As a national safety officer and tireless advocate, John connected people, ideas, and industries to drive real change, from advancing national wellness efforts to mentoring others with humility and heart. His legacy continues to inspire and guide the fire service.
