Serve on an IAFC committee or council. Members address association governance and critical issues facing the fire service.

Join a special interest section. Contribute to the important work of the section by making your interest in volunteering known.

Reach out to your division leaders. Expand your professional network within your region and take advantage of the many opportunities to serve.

Serve as an IAFC rep to an external organization. The IAFC is often called on to serve on work groups and committees convened by other organizations (NFPA, ICC, AFG reviewers). Watch for alerts as opportunities become available.

Join the discussion on KnowledgeNet. Help others by sharing templates and best practices so they don't need to reinvent the wheel. Respond to a fellow member's question.

Become an instructor. Submit your idea for an education session at one of the IAFC's many conferences. Consider teaching at a regional training program or leading an online class though the IAFC Academy.

Participate in grass roots campaigns. Help educate your Congressional representatives on the important issues facing your department and community. Download the IAFC Hot Sheet for talking points on the important issues facing your department and community. Use the Action Center to contact your Congressional representatives or get alerts.

Be seen in D.C. Join with fellow fire and emergency service leaders each Spring in Washington for CFSI week. Visit with U.S. Congressional leaders in their offices.

Invite members of Congress to local events. Invite your elected officials to an open house or to participate in a ride-along. Share how you've benefited from the FIRE/SAFER Grants and offer to be a resource related to fire protection, fire service and EMS issues.

Provide a testimonial. How has IAFC membership benefited you? Share your story with colleagues. Let us know.

Become a mentor. Support a fellow member as they seek to advance in their career.

Spread the word. Like, re-tweet and share information and tips posted on IAFC social media Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn).

Recruit a colleague. Discuss the value of IAFC membership with colleagues within and outside your department. As the chief, sign up your officers for membership to support professional development and succession planning.
