IACP and IAFC strongly support the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) and its critical role in ensuring reliable, secure communications for public safety professionals
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) strongly support the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) and its critical role in ensuring reliable, secure communications for public safety professionals.
Effective communication is essential to the safety of both first responders and the communities they serve. Since its inception, FirstNet has provided a dedicated, interoperable network that meets the unique demands of public safety operations. The IACP and IAFC were instrumental in the development of the legislation that created FirstNet and continue to serve on its Public Safety Advisory Committee to ensure that the needs of public safety are reflected in its operations and priorities.
We are aware of recent proposals that question FirstNet’s effectiveness and suggest alternative approaches. While we welcome innovation and dialogue, we believe that any changes to the current framework must be guided by the operational realities and safety needs of first responders—not commercial interests.
Over the past decade, FirstNet has demonstrated a strong commitment to collaboration, responsiveness, and continuous improvement. Its trusted partnerships with public safety agencies have resulted in a network that evolves with the needs of the field.
The IACP and IAFC urge Congress to strike the current 2027 sunset date and preserve the federal FirstNet authority and preserve the integrity of a system that has become a cornerstone of modern public safety communications. The voices of those who rely on these systems every day—our officers, firefighters and EMS personnel on the front lines—must remain central to this conversation.
