View finalists from previous years

Cosponsored by the IAFC and U.S. Safety Fire Technologies, this award recognizes innovations and achievements in managing resources to reduce the loss of life and property from fire and other emergencies.

This prestigious award was conceived in 1989 by Chief Ronny J. Coleman, IAFC president 1988-1989, and sponsoring partner, Wayne Boyd, president of U.S. Safety Fire Technologies. Over the years, nominations have come from nearly every conceivable program area: management, fire prevention, personnel accountability systems and minority hiring practices, to name a few.

The nomination period officially opens every year in January and closes on or around June 1. An organization may submit only one nomination per application period. The program, project or activity must have been in place for at least one year prior to the nomination.

NOTE: Fire departments that have submitted applications in previous years for programs that were not selected should consider resubmitting their programs, especially if the program has remained active and is continuing to contribute. The judges reviewing the applications change each year, so there is no opportunity for prejudicial consideration. In fact, long-term success programs are highly desirable as nominees.

Seven finalists are selected from all of the nominees. Each program that is selected as a finalist will receive a check for $500. The grand prize winner is selected by the former presidents of the IAFC and will receive a check for $2,000.

Each agency selected as a finalist for the 2010 program will be asked to send a representative to the award presentation at Fire–Rescue International 2010 in Chicago, August 24-27; more information about the timing of the exact presentation and logicstics will be provided to the selected finalists in the summer before the conference.

Nominations must be submitted on the nomination form (above) to IAFC headquarters in Fairfax. The form provides space for describing the project or program and providing contact information. The program must have been in place for at least one year prior to the nomination.

For more information about the program or the nomination process, contact the Excellence Award program coordinator at 703-537-4829 or email awardscoordinator@iafc.org.
