National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Award

The National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Award recognizes firefighters and fire departments that use the Near-Miss Reporting System as a part of their program to prevent line-of-duty deaths and injuries in their departments.

Nomination Requirements

Any member of your department can submit an essay of 500 words or less that answers the questions:

  • How was the program implemented in your department?

  • How has the program contributed to the safety culture in your department?

  • What challenges were overcome to gain acceptance of the program?


The nomination period is now open; the deadline for submission is June 26, 2009. Email your essay to NearMiss@iafc.org or mail it to Near-Miss Program, 4025 Fair Ridge Drive, Fairfax VA 22033.
