This webinar spotlights the executive officer’s role in Whole Community Integrated Risk Management (WCIRM).

The easier part of the process is its technical component. It starts with the executive ensuring their organization has the tools needed to understand the community’s natural, built, and social environments. The environments are then contrasted with current/predicted service-demands and compared with emergency response metrics. If an organization understands strategic level risk reduction, a comprehensive strategy to proactively prevent and mitigate unwanted events can be orchestrated.

The adaptive challenge of the process is, as nearly always, the people-related component. It’s arguably more challenging due to two key issues:

  • Challenge One – how does the executive get their organization to institutionalize risk community-based reduction / mitigation as a core value.
  • Challenge Two – how does the executive serve as a key consultant to decision-makers, political leaders, policymakers, and the community at large to identify acceptable levels of risk and design affordable and sustainable solutions.

The webinar follows the 30-year journey of a fire department that got a rough start in fire prevention. Thanks to education and mentoring, the catalyst behind the journey righted the ship, adjusted the course, and led the department into the arena of WCIRM. The result was the community being recognized internationally by the World Health Organization as a Safe Community USA. The presentation features real-world strategies of how an executive can engage both their organization and community in a successful WCIRM process.
