History-Making Vote on Residential Sprinklers in Minneapolis

On Sunday, September 21, RB64, the proposal that would require residential fire sprinklers to be installed in all newly-constructed one- and two-family dwellings passed with 73% of the vote in favor. This code will now be published in the 2009 edition of the IRC and will become effective in 2011. This action will go down as one of the greatest life safety changes we will see in our careers. No other action can possibly be more responsible for saving citizen and firefighter lives and personal property than adding residential fire sprinkler protection to our homes.

Thanks to everyone in the fire service who showed up for this vote and thanks to the building officials who joined us in this fight; we owe you a tremendous debt of gratitude for your support. Thanks also to the members of the IAFC for your commitment to this effort and the members of the Fire & Life Safety Section who attended the hearings in great numbers. For more about this exciting event, please look for the article under the FLSS banner in the October 15 issue of On Scene.

Sprinklers in Long-Term Care Facilities
A new ruling went into effect on June 18, 2008, requiring that ALL long-term care facilities must install fire sprinkler systems by 2013 if they want to serve Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. This is a great win for three million elderly and disabled Americans in the nation's 16,000 nursing home. There is no more exclusion for existing nursing homes.  Read the full press release.
