IAFC recommends that firefighters to train to NFPA 1010 and informs them of training opportunities

Recently, the IAFC has put out information regarding the 2023 incident in East Palestine, OH, as well as the 2024 incident in Port Newark, NJ. After numerous discussions, the IAFC and our subject matter experts are taking the following steps to fulfill the NTSB’s safety recommendations (R-24-23, R-24-24, M-25-9). The IAFC recommends that all firefighters train to the National Fire Protection Agency’s (NFPA) 1010 standard. By doing so, it is the IAFC’s desire that our actions will lead to increased safety on America’s railways and in America’s ports.

This page describes the NFPA 1010 standard.

IAFC recently published, NFPA 1010: Leading the Charge Toward Standardized, All-Hazards Firefighter TrainingThis effort describes information relating to both incidents, and the need for all firefighters to train to NFPA 1010. Lead the Charge also describes funding opportunities which agencies can use to help train firefighters to NFPA 1010.
