Fire Prevention and Safety Grants: Application Period Opens

The application period for FEMA’s Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant program opens Tuesday, February 18, at 8 a.m. (EST). The application period will close on Friday, March 21 at 5 p.m. (EST).

Part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, the FP&S Grant program focuses on initiatives that will enhance the safety of firefighters and the public with respect to fire and fire-related hazards. It funds grant applications within two activities:

  • Fire Prevention and Safety
  • Research and Development

The Fire Prevention and Safety Activity will fund projects that comply with the categories of

  • General Education/Awareness
  • Code Enforcement/Awareness
  • Fire and Arson Investigation
  • National/State/Regional Programs and Studies

Fire departments are eligible to receive these grants along with national, regional, state, local and tribal organizations and nonprofit organizations that are recognized for their experience and expertise in fire prevention and safety programs and activities.

The Research and Development Activity will fund projects in the categories of

  • Clinical Studies
  • Technology and Product Development
  • Database System Development
  • Dissemination and Implementation Research
  • Preliminary Studies

Eligible applicants for this activity are national, state, local and tribal organizations and such nonprofit organizations as academic (e.g., universities), public-health, occupational-health and injury-prevention institutions.

FEMA has over $32 million allocated for the FP&S Grant program. All eligible grantees must meet a 5% match, unless they can receive an economic hardship waiver. This match can be met through either cash or in-kind contributions.
