Chantilly, Va. – The Volunteer and Combination Officers Section (VCOS) of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) is now accepting applications for the 2018 Emerging Leader Scholarship, sponsored by the Gasaway Consulting Group, LLC (GCG). The Emerging Leader Scholarship seeks individuals that have demonstrated themselves to be a problem solver and a leader of change within their department and their community. The winner of the scholarship will receive $1,500 to assist with registration and travel expenses for the upcoming VCOS Symposium in the Sun.
"I am a big proponent of the concept of paying it forward," noted GCG President Dr. Richard B. Gasaway. "The VCOS and the Symposium in the Sun have played a very important role in my development as a chief officer. I am delighted to be able to give back to the VCOS and help a new chief attend this world-class conference."
Developing the leaders of the future is key to success in the fire service. The Emerging Leader Scholarship is not just about recognizing individuals who have set themselves apart as emerging leaders in their department and community, it is also an opportunity for new and future leaders to learn and grow into their full potential as leaders.
“Being honored with the Emerging Leader Scholarship in 2017 was something I will always cherish but the real gift was the education and networking I received, through the scholarship, at Symposium in the Sun. I would encourage any officer who is interested in leading volunteer firefighters to take advantage of this offering,” stated Chief Joseph Bartos, West Point (Va.) Fire Department and 2017 Emerging Leader Scholarship winner.
Applications are being accepted for the Emerging Leader Scholarship until August 3.
You do not need to be an IAFC-VCOS member to apply for the Emerging Leader Scholarship. This scholarship is open to all ranks including new fire chiefs, officers and firefighters. The applicant must be an emerging leader.
