NFPA, IAFC and NVFC Launch 2016 Safety Stand Down Quiz Sweepstakes

As part of the 2016 Safety Stand Down, the “Fire Service Safety Stand Down Quiz” Sweepstakes is back. Hosted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in coordination with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), the interactive online quiz reinforces the training messages behind this year’s theme, “The First Five Minutes of Fire Attack.”

The quiz will be available online May 16 through June 17, 2016 at www.nfpa.org/fireservicequiz and contains 15 questions on firefighter safety during the first five minutes of structural fire response. Career and volunteer firefighters, EMTs and other fire department employees and members are invited to participate. Everyone who completes the quiz will be automatically entered into the sweepstakes; 200 randomly selected participants will win a specially designed challenge coin commemorating this year’s Safety Stand Down.

Safety Stand Down, formerly called International Fire/EMS Safety and Health Week, takes place June 19-25, 2016. Members of the fire and emergency services are encouraged to use this week to focus on increasing their safety at the fireground and what each member of the department should be doing in the first five minutes of structural fire response, including the chief, incident commander, company officer, and firefighter. Safety Stand Down is a joint initiative of the IAFC and NVFC.

“Safety Stand Down is an important initiative for first responders to learn about safety during the critical first five minutes of a fire attack, including topics like stretching the initial hose line and putting water on the fire,” said Ken Willette, NFPA’s fire service segment director and a former fire chief. “We want to help more fire service members learn about the importance of safety and have found this annual quiz to be a successful way of doing that. We look forward to even further participation this year.”
