Be Smoke Ready: Protect Your Health and Community

The Be Smoke Ready provides guidance on preparing for and responding to wildfire smoke to protect health and safety. It emphasizes the importance of smoke readiness, as wildfire smoke can travel long distances and impact air quality for extended periods. Vulnerable groups include children, older adults, pregnant individuals, people with preexisting conditions, and those with limited access to resources. Pets can also be affected.

Why Smoke Readiness Matters

  • Wildfire smoke contains harmful gases and fine particles (PM2.5) that can cause respiratory and heart issues.
  • Long-term exposure increases the risk of heart and lung diseases.
  • Monitoring air quality using reliable sources like EPA's Air Quality Index (AQI) is crucial.

Ready: Prepare Ahead

  • Know Your Air Quality: Use trusted sources like fire.airnow.gov to monitor conditions.
  • Create a Clean Air Space: Use an air purifier or make a DIY air cleaner with a box fan and MERV 13 filters.
  • Stock Up on Supplies: Have masks (N95 or better), medications, and essentials ready.

Set: Stay Informed

  • Monitor Conditions: Check air quality daily and watch for signs of worsening smoke.
  • Adjust Activities: Limit outdoor activities during smoky conditions, especially for at-risk groups.
  • Communicate Plans: Share readiness plans with family and neighbors.

Go: Take Action

  • Protect Yourself: Use your clean air space or evacuate if conditions worsen.
  • Help Others: Check on vulnerable neighbors and share resources.
  • Post-Smoke Cleanup: Ventilate, clean surfaces, and replace air filters before returning.

This resource also includes instructions for assembling a DIY air cleaner and emphasizes the importance of staying informed, adjusting activities, and helping others during wildfire smoke events. It was published with support from the USDA Forest Service and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
