2026 Company Officer of the Year Award Winner Lieutenant Allen Green of the Chattanooga Fire Department

From Adversity to Action: How Lieutenant Allen Green Is Redefining Fire Service Leadership

Some leaders inspire through their words. Others inspire through their actions.

Lieutenant Allen Green of the Chattanooga Fire Department does both.

Nominated for Company Officer of the Year, Green has built a career that extends far beyond emergency response. As a company officer, educator, author, mentor, and nonprofit founder, he demonstrates that today's fire service leaders don't just respond to emergencies—they work tirelessly to prevent them while creating lasting change in their communities.

A Journey That Shaped a Mission

Lieutenant Green's path to the fire service began long before he ever stepped into a fire station.

Raised in foster care and group homes and supported by Bethel Bible Village, Green experienced firsthand the challenges many young people face. After graduating from Hixson High School, he attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, pursuing a degree in chemistry. When his twin sons were born, he paused his education to provide for his family—a decision that ultimately led him into the fire service.

More than a decade later, he completed his chemistry degree while serving as a firefighter, proving that perseverance and purpose can overcome even life's greatest obstacles.

Today, his personal mission is reflected in everything he does: helping others rise above difficult circumstances and transforming pain into hope.

Transforming Community Risk Reduction

As a Fire and Life Safety Educator, Green has reimagined what community risk reduction can look like.

Using data to identify neighborhoods at greatest risk, he develops education programs that reach the communities where they can have the greatest impact. His belief is simple: prevention begins with education.

That philosophy inspired Read to Succeed, a literacy and fire safety initiative that brings Chattanooga firefighters into elementary classrooms each month. By reading with students while teaching life-saving fire safety lessons, firefighters build trust with children long before an emergency ever occurs.

The program holds special meaning for Green. He launched it at Calvin Dunson Elementary—the very school he attended as a child—bringing his story full circle while giving back to the community that helped shape him.

When the Right Resource Didn't Exist, He Created It

Determined to make fire safety education more engaging for children, Green authored his own children's book, Mom! Dad! What Should I Do?

Published in 2025, the book teaches families about:

  • Creating and practicing home fire escape plans
  • Establishing a safe outdoor meeting place
  • The importance of working smoke alarms

The book intentionally features children who reflect the diversity of Chattanooga, allowing young readers to see themselves in the story—and even as future firefighters. Proceeds from the book support Green's nonprofit and literacy initiatives, and departments across the country have already begun incorporating it into their own fire prevention efforts.

Investing in the Next Generation

Green's commitment to young people extends beyond the classroom.

He founded PPCH, Inc. (Pain, Perseverance, Character, Hope) to mentor at-risk youth and provide the encouragement, guidance, and stability that changed his own life.

Through PPCH and years of volunteer work with organizations like Bethel Bible Village and Barger Academy of Fine Arts, Green has become a trusted mentor to countless young people throughout Chattanooga.

His dedication earned him the Ralph Cothran Civil Service Fire Fighter of the Year Award, recognizing not only his service as a firefighter but also his lasting investment in the community's youth.

A National Voice for Fire Prevention

Lieutenant Green's influence reaches well beyond Tennessee.

As a leader with the Sound Off Initiative, he works alongside nationally recognized fire safety advocates to promote working smoke alarms and improve fire safety outreach, particularly for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Whether presenting at universities, career fairs, or departments across the country, Green continues to share innovative approaches to fire prevention and community engagement that help strengthen the fire service nationwide.

Leadership Rooted in Service

Despite his growing national recognition, Green remains grounded in humility.

He's known as the officer who arrives early, invests in his crew, remembers children's names long after classroom visits, and celebrates milestones alongside the people he mentors.

His philosophy reflects the heart of servant leadership:

"Teaching and educating, for me, is like a ministry. It's not just about giving out information. It's about implementing change and growth."

That commitment is evident in every aspect of his career—from the firehouse and the classroom to the nonprofit he founded and the lives he continues to change.

A Model for the Future of the Fire Service

Lieutenant Allen Green exemplifies what modern fire service leadership can be: courageous, compassionate, innovative, and deeply committed to serving others.

By transforming his own life experiences into opportunities for education, mentorship, and prevention, he has expanded the role of a company officer beyond emergency response and into lasting community impact.

His story reminds us that the greatest leaders don't simply answer the call—they inspire others to rise with them.
