On December 4, the U.S. Senate passed legislation to reauthorize the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer by voice vote. The Firefighter Cancer Registry Reauthorization Act (H.R. 3821) will increase the authorization for the national firefighter cancer registry to $5.5 million from Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 through FY 2028. This bill sets out a long-term funding profile for the program.
“This registry has made a difference for firefighters everywhere,” said Chief Josh Waldo, President and Board Chair of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. “I want to thank all of the colleagues and representatives that have reauthorized it and made its continued success possible. It has already helped save lives of firefighters with cancer and will no doubt save many more in the coming years.”
The bill passed the House on March 6, 2024 by a vote of 413-7. It next goes to President Biden for signature into law.
