A Hustle Worth Having – Recruiting GEN Z

Across the country, communities rely on a special kind of dedication, the kind that doesn’t clock out at the end of a shift. It’s a commitment driven by purpose, pride, and the desire to serve others. That’s exactly what the national campaign “A Hustle Worth Having” represents.

More Than a Role, It’s a Hustle with Purpose

This campaign shines a spotlight on GEN Z volunteer fire service members who balance careers, families, and personal responsibilities while answering the call when their communities need them most. It’s not just about recruitment. It’s about recognizing the passion behind the profession and inspiring others to step forward.

Building Momentum Nationwide

Jason Caughey Campaigns like this don’t succeed without strong leadership and passionate advocates. That’s why we extend sincere gratitude to Chief Jason Caughey, an IAFC VCOS board member, for his instrumental role in bringing this effort to life.

From the very beginning, Chief Caughey demonstrated unwavering support for the campaign, especially during its national kickoff. Through numerous interviews across the United States, he helped elevate the message, amplify the mission, and connect with audiences far beyond a single department or region.

His leadership brought credibility, authenticity, and urgency to the conversation around volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention.
“Really, what this campaign does is identify that there’s a place for everybody in the fire service and the volunteer fire service,” said Chief Caughey in his interview with the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. “Side hustle, in the generic sense, is ‘that’s where I make a little extra revenue for my hobbies or my passions.’ This side hustle warms your heart. It provides you with an emotional connection that makes you feel good to have.”

Chief Caughey was one of several people who dedicated time during National Volunteer Month to speak with reporters, share a personal perspective and advocate for volunteer firefighters. These interviews led to compelling coverage in outlets including Spectrum News Rochester aid Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

Join the Movement
We are asking others to join the movement and become campaign ambassadors to help validate the importance of this universal effort by expanding awareness for the need for volunteer firefighters in communities nationwide. IAFC will work with you and your local media outlets to share and explain the impact local volunteering has had on your communities. Anyone interested in becoming a campaign ambassador can email elemieux@iafc.org or megan.thiele@iafc.org.
