A Chemical Operations Support Specialist (COSS) bridges chemical expertise and emergency response, acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for hazardous materials incidents, supporting the FEMA CBRN office, and advising on decontamination, waste, and response plans, while in civilian/military roles, they might operate chemical equipment, manage inventory, or handle logistics in industrial settings, requiring strong technical, analytical, and communication skills for safe and efficient operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Emergency Response: Advise on chemical incident assessment, response capabilities, decontamination, and waste management.
  • Technical Expertise: Serve as an SME, bridging chemical knowledge with operational realities for effective mitigation.
  • Planning: Develop Incident Action Plans (IAPs) and integrate federal/state resources during crises.
  • Support: Provide technical assistance to Incident Commanders and emergency management teams.
  • Logistics (Civilian): Handle chemical inventory, receiving, stocking, and maintaining process equipment.

  • Technical: Understanding of chemical processes, safety protocols, and hazardous materials.
  • Analytical: Ability to analyze data, estimate exposures, and solve complex problems.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written skills to convey complex info to diverse audiences.
  • Soft Skills: Detail-oriented, methodical, persistent, innovative, and collaborative.
