Professional Development

The IAFC affirms professional development is the planned, progressive career-long process of education, training, self-development, and experience.

Mission: The IAFC Professional Development Committee will provide and set the strategic direction for professional development, through a planned, progressive, career-long process of education and self-development to meet the all-encompassing leadership challenges of today and tomorrow.

Vision: The IAFC Professional Development Committee strives to provide the necessary leadership and influence to make the IAFC the international focus for the development of effective and successful incumbent and future leaders.

  1. Lead
  2. Educate
  3. Serve

At Fire-Rescue International 2017, the Committee adopted three (3) priority initiatives for 2018:

  1. Identify and adopt best practices for professional development from around the globe.
  2. Support the work of the National Fire Academy to evaluate, revise, and update the Executive Fire Officer (EFO) program curriculum.
  3. Develop strategies to market a path for becoming the most successful professional development entity.

In 2010, the Committee published the IAFC Officer Development Handbook, Second Edition. Currently, the Committee is making revisions to the Handbook and is developing a Taskbook to accompany this extremely valuable professional development resource.
