Historical Hazmat Case Studies

The Hazmat Fusion Center includes case studies on historical incidents that offer responders an opportunity to learn from the past and apply those lessons learned to future incidents for a more successful outcome.

Case studies include:

  • 1986: Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company (B&O) freight train derailment
  • 1973: While contents were being off-loaded, a leaking Droxol Propane storage tank connection sparks ignition
  • 1947: As longshoremen descended into the hold to load the remainder of a consignment of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, fire between a ship's hull and the cargo holds is discovered
